This step is especially helpful for amateur enthusiasts, but experienced outdoorspeople can also be caught by distraction, confidence, group pressure, or complacency.

  1. Name the likely pressure before the outing starts.
  2. Choose the safest simple response while calm.
  3. Say the response out loud so the group knows the cue.

The destination is still ahead, but one person is quieter, slower, and making small footing mistakes.

The trail is icier or wetter than expected, and the planned activity now needs traction, layers, or water gear you do not have.
