Activity guide

Packing should follow exposure, distance, and consequences—not optimism.

Maryland outings become unnecessarily hard when people pack for the wrong version of the day. A short refuge boardwalk, a shoulder-season paddling trip, and a breezy coastal walk do not need the same gear, even if they all happen in one state.

The goal is not to carry everything. The goal is to bring what protects comfort, timing, hydration, weather margin, navigation, and a calm return when conditions shift.

Trip prep and packing
Pack for exposure and consequences first; pack for convenience second.

Build a packing focus

Choose the season, exposure, and trip window to build a stronger packing priority list.

Use packing as part of trip design

A good packing list is really a way of checking whether the outing is still realistic. If the day requires more complexity than the group wants to carry, simplify the outing rather than pretending that more gear will solve the mismatch.
