Ingredients
Backcountry Dehydrated Chili Mac
Ingredients
Method
- Pre-bag the dry ingredients at home with the recipe name, water amount, and cook time written on the bag.
- Boil water in a stable stove spot sheltered from wind, using the smallest pot that fits the meal.
- Stir in the dry mix, turn off or lower heat as soon as the food can hydrate safely, and cover the pot.
- Let the meal stand until grains or noodles soften, then add oil, crunch, or hot sauce packets.
- Check doneness with time, texture, and a food thermometer when meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs are part of the meal.
- Use a small amount of hot water to loosen the pot and drink or pack out residue where appropriate.
Field notes
- Best fit: backcountry supper in all season.
- Choose this recipe when the cooking method supports the day rather than stealing time from the outing.
- Reduce dishwater by eating from the cooking pot or a single bowl per person when the site has limited services.
